Are you using a prescription drug for you or your child's ADHD problem? Many people are starting to understand the connection between the body's natural operating system along with the brain's central processing unit, if you will, which controls each of your physical functions.
Every piece of food you ingest, every thought, even your movements are orchestrated by all your body's complex systems; which is why prescription drugs work to some extent. The drug is attempting to substitute or alter the natural reaction that is lacking. Each prescription, with its own list of possible side effects or ADHD drug problems can arise from constant use, and the long-term effects are just becoming available.
Of the long-acting stimulants three contain methylphenidate (Concerta, Metadate CD, and Ritalin-LA), and 1 (Adderall XR) are made up of mixed salts to form an amphetamine. Two of these substances, Metadate CD and Ritalin-LA, can work and control ADHD for about 6 to 8 hours. Adderall XR and Concerta were designed to be effective over a 10 to 12 hour period.
Ritalin, Adderal, Dexedrine, Dextrostat and Methylin ER are short or intermediate acting stimulants, not as popular as in years past since the longer acting drugs are more suitable for school or work situations. The only reason being that the drugs last most of the day and will not interrupt schedules for dosing, or there is a less likely chance of missing a dose.
ADHD drug problems with Strattera (adults) can include lowered libido, impotence, ejaculatory problems, constipation, dry mouth, nausea, decreased appetite, dizziness, insomnia, menstrual cramps and problems passing or holding urine.
With children or teenagers ADHD drug problems can include very severe reactions to Strattera such as suicidal thoughts and actions, anxiety or agitation, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, hostility, mania, depression and others. The newest findings with regard to psychotic symptoms include hearing voices, paranoid behavior or suspicion, severe liver damage, sudden death in people who have heart problems, stroke or an increase in blood pressure, allergic reactions such as swelling or hives, height and weight underdeveloped in children. Last but not least, remember the FDA requires a "black box" warning on this drug; meaning that their studies have indicated a considerable risk of serious and even life-threatening effects as mentioned.
Big pharmaceutical companies are always working on developing and marketing new drugs for a variety of illnesses, not just ADHD. Big money is involved in funding, research and most of all profits. Sure, these drugs must perform clinical trials to prove that it is safe for the FDA, but what about the consumer? Remember the drugs are tested in a very controlled setting by the drug company, aimed at FDA approval. Add to the growing concern of additional ADHD drug problems and the fact that the newest research shows an increased threat in adulthood for depression and a greater probability of substance and prescription abuse. In general the public is searching for a sudden solution to correct an illness or imbalance that might otherwise be corrected with diet and natural remedies that will have a much healthier outcome. A great example would be the instance of high blood pressure; natural versus prescription pills. Some circumstances require prescription blood pressure medication such as the inherited forms; this type can be difficult to control. Generally and most often, the cause of high blood pressure is diet and weight. This method is of course not an overnight remedy, but with your health and future health in mind it can be changed and why wouldn't you want that!
I won't go into all the alternative steps you can take to avoid ADHD drug problems, but in general there have been studies done with the following and their connection to ADHD and diet;
1. Artificial dyes and flavors are in most everything kids want and eat. Dyes, monosodium glutamate, (MSG), and artificial sweeteners are among the top offenders. Did you know that blueberries in most pre-packaged mixes are not really blueberries!
2. Caffeine found in chocolates, refined carbs, and carbonated beverages could be leaching minerals out of your body; minerals are necessary for nerve function, not to mention strong bones. Sodium also acts similar to caffeine in your system, is in most everything; especially processed foods.
3. Salicylate sensitivity, or intolerance, can wreak havoc on children when even a small amount of this substance is ingested or absorbed through the skin. Salicylates are found in foods, medications and even cosmetics.
A healthy diet that can improve ADHD drug problems and therefore brain function includes; the B complex vitamins, whole grain cereals, breads, rice or almond milk, eggs, fish, nuts, and leafy green vegetables. Eat small meals including protein at each meal. Calcium helps cell membranes and the nervous system. Magnesium is known for calming the nervous system; maintaining muscle and nerve function. Eliminating dairy and substituting with calcium supplements can eliminate allergic reactions which can aggravate moods and allergies. Many adults and children with ADHD have mineral and vitamin deficiencies especially, Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) deficiency, zinc and iron.
There are many ADHD drug problems and the risk is not nominal. Treating the symptoms of ADHD without the many chemicals and controlling and even eliminating them can be found in a natural, alternative remedy along with diet.
