The medical transcription industry is huge and it keeps on getting bigger. Recently a US labor statistics report predicted that the demand for medical transcriptionist will increase in the coming 8 years. Some medical transcription companies in the U.S. are already outsourcing the work to India to keep up with the demand.
Now is the best time to get into this sector. However, it's not that simple and easy to become a medical transcriptionist. It won't happen overtime and there are a lot of technical skills and specialized knowledge you must know before you can start working in this sector.
Here are some of the critical skills you should have to start work as a medical transcriptionist.
1. Ability to use tech equipments.
Transcription work involves using computers, voice playback gadgets and other hardware equipments. You must also know how to use word processing software, spell-checkers and other productivity tools.
And since your work as a medical transcriptionist will involve data transfer, access and retrieval, you will also be required to be internet proficient.
2. Typing skills.
Unlike traditional office work where typing skills is still required but not a critical part of the job description, in medical transcription your ability to type fast and accurately will be among the critical skill requirements.
3. Expertise in medical terminologies
You will be typing or transcribing the audio recordings of health care professionals, doctors, physicians and specialist. So expect the work to involve all sorts of medical terminologies and you are expected to understand all of the terms, type them up and even make corrections when necessary.
4. Grammar and Punctuation
If you are a native English speaker, then this will come as second nature for you. Still you must make sure that you are very proficient in Basic English grammar and punctuation syntax. Forming proper grammars and correctly punctuating sentences will be included in your job as a medical transcriptionist.
5.Knowledge of the human anatomy
You will be required to have a good working knowledge of the human anatomy. Since the medical reports you will produce from the voice recordings will describe anatomical structures and the diseases that affects them along with diagnoses and treatments, you must be able to properly document the anatomical structures discussed.
6. Knowledge of diseases
This knowledge goes hand in hand with your knowledge in human anatomy. Since the recordings will mostly focus on diseases affecting the body parts and corresponding treatments, you must be able to properly document the disease as described by the physician.
7. Knowledge of Pathophysiology
Pathophysiology is all about the major systems in the human body. It includes the digestive system, the respiratory system, endocrine, cardiovascular system etc. These systems will come-up in most medical audio-reports and is critical to doctors and their patients. So make sure you have a clear understanding of these systems and able to document them properly.
8. Skill in use and command of the medical language.
This is connected with your knowledge of medical terms and punctuation. You must be familiar with the specialized vocabulary of the medical profession. There are certain word differentiations, abbreviations, slang and jargons used in the medical language and will come up in the audio recordings so you must have the appropriate skills to understand it.
