Fair-skinned people are the ones who commonly get skin moles. When melanocytes appear in a cluster, skin moles are normally formed. Some moles will be present right from birth, while some other moles will develop during later phases of your life. It is normal for one person to get around ten to forty moles in parts of their body commonly exposed to the sun.
Statistics show that, in America alone, more than three hundred millions of Americans have moles. These are nevus, or the common moles. Meanwhile, at least one in ten Americans has dysplastic nevus. That is about thirty million people in all. This is not an alarming fact. Approximately seventy thousand people having melanoma in one year is quite alarming, though. Melanoma is metastatic and can spread to all parts of the body, causing great harm. Other organs could be affected, like your kidney, lungs and even your bones. The earlier you detect, the safer is your health condition.
Once you confirm that you are suffering from melanoma, there is no other option. You have to remove those skin moles completely using surgical procedures. Melanoma is found in both men and women, though in different parts of their body. In women, it mainly appears in the lower part of the legs. For men, melanoma is found in the neck and back region. Those who have dark skin will seldom suffer from melanoma. When they do get it, however, they are found under the toes or the soles of the feet. Two in ten thousand Americans experience this skin problem. There are more than eight lakh Americans suffering from melanoma till date.
Will a normal person be able to differentiate a normal mole from a melanoma?
The distinction can be found in the color and size of the skin moles. Melanoma reaches around six mm in width. This is larger than the size of a normal pencil eraser. Meanwhile, dysplastic nevus has a width of about five mm. Although larger than melanoma, dysplastic nevi are benign. Normal moles will be just half an inch in width. It can be up to a maximum of three to four inches.
You can easily identify a melanoma, as it normally has an uneven color distribution. It will have varying color shades. The colors could vary from black, brown, blue, grey, pink and white. It is normal to see pink, red and brown shades in dysplastic nevus. But nevus will only have one color. People with these moles will normally have them brown or black. The black moles will be the highly-pigmented ones. Normal skin moles will normally take on the skin tone of the person. Melanoma's contour is blurred. They will normally be four mm wide and will grow even larger as the skin cancer becomes worse.
Moles are not dangerous at all. They do not have to be removed compulsorily. However, they may cause social awkwardness to some people. This is the root cause of low confidence among many people. Some cultures in the world consider moles to be beauty marks, provided they appear on certain spots of the body. Everybody desires to be perfect.
